An Ohio bus driver has been suspended without pay, and is facing criminal charges for putting her hands on an eight-year-old boy who she says was "acting out" on the bus. The incident was captured on camera.
On January 17, a camera is rolling on an Ashland City School bus as driver Cathy Goetz interacts with an 8-old boy, who was upset when he got on the bus.
According to the police report the 43-year-old Goetz told investigators she did not know the child was autistic and that when he started screaming, she tried to get him to stop.
In the video, the boy continues to scream and the video shows that Cathy Goetz eventually stops the bus and confronts him.
After Goetz smacks the boy in the face, he is heard threatening her and that`s when Cathy Goetz calls the bus dispatcher, who calls 911.
As Goetz waits for Ashland Police to arrive, the boy continues to scream and stomp his feet and that`s when Goetz grabs him.
When an Ashland police officer gets onto the bus and escorts the boy off, Cathy Goetz tells him that the 8-year-old threatened her and hit and kicked her, but does not tell the officer that she slapped the boy and grabbed him around the collar.
After watching the video, authorities in Ashland County decided to charge Cathy Goetz with assault, menacing and child endangering.
Goetz told investigators and school district officials that she did not remember slapping the child, and said that she grabbed him by the collar to prevent him from kicking her.
Goetz was initially suspended with pay, but she is now suspended without pay and could face termination.
"It was just the way that the situation was handled, what she did both verbally was a concern but....It was the physical part that upset me, and I thought that once I saw that, something had to be done," Dr. Douglas Marrah, School Superintendent said.
NICE EASTER WEEKEND
The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.
Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon. High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.
It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s. Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
