Mich. lawmaker says she mistakenly took property tax break

A Michigan lawmaker says she and her husband mistakenly took a property tax break on a rental property they own in suburban Detroit.

FOX 2 obtained the documents that show Democratic state Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Detroit and her husband claimed a 100 percent personal residence exemption since 2008 for both the Detroit home they live in and a Dearborn rental property.

Only the Detroit home was eligible for the homestead exemption, which reduces school taxes.

Tlaib, who is running for state Senate, says it was an "honest mistake" and she's embarrassed the she didn't catch the error. Tlaib says she will pay the taxes she wasn't assessed, which could amount to more than $1,000 with interest and penalties.

Tlaib said she's contacted officials to correct the information.

However, the Wayne County Deputy Treasurer, Dave Szymanski, tells FOX 2's Taryn Asher the office was alerted by another media outlet about the double claim last week. He told us Tlaib called to rectify the situation, describing it as a 'mistake' by her husband. She offered to pay the difference right away, but Szymanski says the penalty and interest that was based on the value of the house needed to be calculated. He says it's expected to cost a few thousand dollars.

FOX 2 could not reach Tlaib for comment.

The Wayne County Treasurer's Office says, at this point, they do not believe the Tlaib's were trying to cheat the system.
