NYC seeks to punish speeding taxis

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A new plan unveiled by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday to target pedestrian deaths may mean more surveillance technology in taxis.

The administration is calling on the TLC to explore automated technology solutions like pausing the meter if the driver exceeds the speed limit, adding speed governors to all vehicles, and requiring all vehicles to include collision warning equipment. TLC will also pilot a program to provide driver and passenger alerts if the vehicle is traveling over the speed limit.

This is in addition to adding more speed cameras and red light cameras across the city.

The administration says that since the program’s inception in 1988, the city’s 190 red light cameras have issued over 4 million violations.

The city is launching a Vision Zero program citing an average of 250 deaths and 4,000 injuries a year in the city due to traffic crashes.

A crackdown on jaywalking in the 6-weeks since de Blasio took office has led to an 800% rise in tickets.

As part of the plan, the city will request permission to reduce citywide speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph and expand the use of speed and red light enforcement cameras.

Other proposals in the mayor's plan include:

The NYPD will increase precinct-level enforcement of speeding violations by adding additional personnel in its Highway Division and ensuring every precinct has access to state-of-the-art speed detection devices.

The DOT will be ordered to implement major safety engineering enhancements at 50 intersections and corridors each year.  The goal will be to make streets easier for everyone to use with improved visibility, safer speeds, and more predictable movements.
