Student-drivers taking road test get no break for snow

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Because of high demand, most beginner drivers schedule their driver's test two months out. So when they walk to the car on testing day, they can't really cancel. They just have to get behind the wheel and hope for the best.

"The first time I took it it was snowing too and I failed," says Ashley Deleon, 17.

"I was kind of nervous because the first time I didn't pass," says Amit Jaggernaugh, also 19.

Overnight snowfall left student drivers in Cunningham Park in Queens with slippery conditions and fraying nerves for the most important driving day of their young lives.

"I didn't want to take it," Ashley says. "I couldn't even sleep because I was scared."

On her second try, Ashley passed her driving test. So too did Amit.

"I hit the hills, the snow, like twice, but it was fine," he says.

Driverama Auto School instructor Joanne Fabrizio watched her students pass and fail these exams for 30 years. She says the examiners don't give any consideration for the snow. She says snowy roads often increase a student's chance of failure.

"They get a little more nervous," she says.

But on this day in this slushy Queens parking lot we witnessed mostly triumph and relief.

"Finally. I don't have to take the bus anymore," Ashley says.

While no sunset or even glimmer of sunshine reveals itself, Amit drives into the distance behind the wheel of his older brother's Beamer as a newly christened legal driver in the State of New York.
