Good, bad and ugly of winter warm-ups

Posted: Updated:

Few people were complaining about the warm weather on Tuesday, but even though some took the chance to catch some sun without their coats, the heat wave has left a mess behind.

Weeks of snowy, subzero temperatures took a toll on even the hardiest Minnesotans, but the sunny jump in the mercury came with a sloppy sidekick -- melt.

At Diamond Lake Ace Hardware, roof rakes are a popular buy at $50 a pop to help prevent ice dams -- meaning even more work for snow-exhausted homeowners.

Yet, raking the snow from rooftops can prevent a bigger problem from developing and damaging a home. Copper Valley Restoration crews have been hard at work removing ice dams because the thaw only makes them get a lot worse a lot faster. In fact, they removed more on Tuesday than they did all last week.

The rising temperatures also left slushy swamps at many metro intersections, and roads could get treacherous as that water freezes again overnight. In fact, there were 111 crashes due to slick streets on Tuesday -- 30 more than were reported during Monday's snow storm.

Even despite the downsides to the mid-winter warm up, many Minnesotans took the opportunity to let the heavy, wet snow stick to their skis or snow-tires as they brought bikes back out again.
