U-M students hold all-night protest for racial diversity

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

A group of students held an all-night protest at the University of Michigan to promote racial diversity.  

The 12-hour "1,000 Speak Out for Racial Justice" event began Tuesday evening and is scheduled to run through Wednesday morning. It was hosted by the United Coalition for Racial Justice.

The movement for a more diverse presence on campus started with leaders of the Black Student Union but has expanded.

"If you look at Latino students and Native American students, the enrollment numbers are, you know, it's a poor representation of what it should be," says graduate student Kyera Singleton.

"We want a program that is going to aim at hiring more faculty and staff of color, and also attracting more students of color," says organizer Austin McCoy.

"The university's response has been a little bit disappointing. There is a tendency to kind of create new committees and appoint new officers, but there isn't really a real advance from the top. And what we're asking for today is that commitment from the top," says graduate student Stefan Aune.

The event was held in the Shapiro Library on campus.
