NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Actor Alec Baldwin claims he is leaving public life and New York City.

The often media-embattled New York native wrote a 5,000 word essay published in New York Magazine titled "I Give Up.'

The 55-year-old said being labeled a homophobic bigot last year after an altercation with a photographer was the last straw.

He says he is not homophobic and never used a slur.

Here is an excerpt from Baldwin's essay:

Am I a homophobe? Look, I work in show business. I am awash in gay people, as colleagues and as friends. I’m doing Rock of Ages one day, making out with Russell Brand. Soon after that, I’m advocating with Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Cynthia Nixon for marriage equality. I’m officiating at a gay friend’s wedding. I’m not a homophobic person at all. But this is how the world now sees me.

I haven’t changed, but public life has.

MSNBC suspended and later canceled Baldwin's show on the cable channel after the incident with the photographer.

Baldwin also had a confrontation with two Fox 5 News reporters outside his Manhattan home in Nov. 2013.

Baldwin walked up to Robert Moses, who was covering the conviction of a woman who was stalking him, and warned the reporter to leave the sidewalk in front of his building.

He started by saying, "You're in my way."

Moses answered, "Any reaction?"

"You're in my way," Baldwin responded.

Baldwin, who had been out walking his dog, then warned Moses to leave the area before he left the building again with his wife and child.

Baldwin then went inside but quickly turned around and came back out of the building. He ordered Moses to acknowledge that he understood what he had said.

Baldwin said, "If you're still here when my wife and kid come out, you're going to have a big problem, you know that."

As he reentered the building, Baldwin turned around again and said, "You are as dumb as you look, you are with Fox, right."

A few hours later, Baldwin confronted Fox 5 reporter Linda Schmidt and demanded an apology from her, falsely accusing her of almost hitting his wife with a microphone.

"This is sort of like fraternity. From Sean Penn to Alec Baldwin to now Sam Worthington, they spend all day getting filmed and then someone puts a camera in their face and they get upset. I'm the one who always says why is there only one photographer here?" said Curtis Sliwa, host of The Curtis Sliwa Show on AM 970 The Apple.

Baldwin would presumably be leaving the big Apple with his wife, Hilaria, and their young daughter.
