What to do if you're caught in a rip current

A warning if you're hitting the beach this summer -- rip currents could be a problem. Rip currents can carry away even strong swimmers, so don't take chances when red flags are up and/or life guards aren't on duty. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including the Great Lakes.

The first storm in a one-two punch heading for Hawaii clamored ashore overnight Friday as a weakened tropical storm, while a second system close behind it strengthened and was on track to pass north of the islands. Tropical Storm Iselle's eye crossed onto the Big Island about 5 miles east of Pahala with winds at 60 mph. Iselle is the first tropical storm to hit the state in 22 years.

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

While the weather outside has been frightful, clothing stores look delightful. Spring colors are starting to pop up, letting us know that the next season is just around the corner. But with temperatures still near the freezing mark this week, no one is ready to whip out a flowing dress with peep-toe shoes.

Fashion designer Autumn Hawk agrees.

"This polar vortex, I actually call it the cute outfit killer," Hawk says. "It's really hard to look cute and people are confused on what to wear right now."

So here are some tips to help you transition your dark winter wardrobe into a breath of fresh spring air.

Start with white clothes. Yes, white!

"White is not like it was in the '40s and you can wear it any season now," Hawk says.

A crisp-collared shirt or t-shirt will brighten up any dark hue.

As we all know, April showers bring May flowers. Stay one step ahead wearing something with a floral print.

Nail polish is always a fun way to bring in spring colors.

"You want to stick with the corals and hot pinks right now," Hawk says. "The big trend is to do your ring finger a shade darker."

Accessories are the easiest way to change your wardrobe from one season to the next. A simple colorful scarf, handbag, or belt can make any winter outfit pop.

Finish up with makeup for a spring ray of light.

"The big thing is you want to keep it matte. Shiny lips are really just not in right now," Hawk says. "Khloe Kardashian right now is really getting it right with her makeup."

So as you look in your closet, remember autumn's advice: "You really have to go to your accessories. Layering is the key right now."
