Your car is spying on you

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Sleek, stylish and smooth on the road, smart cars equipped with GPS might just be a little more intelligent than you think.

Tech expert Seth Porges says car makers' ability to know exactly where you're going at what time of day is a potentially very lucrative side business for auto makers who might be looking to sell your private info for some big bucks.

"The way these cars are tracking you is pretty much exactly like your smart phone is today," Porges says.

He says it could potentially be a gold mine because of targeted advertising and marketing.

That is precisely why Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is demanding new federal regulations to prevent manufacturers from selling your info without your permission.  He says vehicle-to-vehicle, GPS and so-called black-boxes collect "reams of information."

Schumer is calling on both the Federal Trade Commission and the National Highway Safety Traffic Safety administration to establish what he calls "clear, robust guidelines" on the data that can be collected and give drivers clear opportunities to opt out of having their information shared.

"If your car has a GPS, it's tracking your every movement. It knows your favorite places to visit. It knows where you like to eat, where you shop, where you go on vacation."

Schumer cites a recent study by the Government Accountability Office that found 90 percent of car and device makers share the tracking data they collect.

Six people were indicted Wednesday in an international ring that managed to take over more than 1,000 StubHub users' accounts and fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game and Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon," the Manhattan district attorney said. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thieves would then resell the tickets and split up the proceeds.
