Man Falls Into Icy Lake While Rescuing Dogs

Posted: Updated:

A Virginia man probably feels lucky to be alive after a dramatic rescue on an icy lake. The 80-year-old ventured out to save his dogs but soon needed help himself.

After reaching his pets, the man fell through the ice.

At 80, Willam Blackwell has never even been hospitalized before today, but out on the lake he came face to face with an emergency situation that required and emergency rescue.

It was 3:00 in the afternoon Sunday when William Blackwell looked out his back window and saw his two dogs Bella and Coco out on the ice. William's son Channing says that just as his father rescued one dog, the ice broke, and all three went under.

The video from the Nokesville Volunteer Fire Department shows that after their members were unable to reach William, they needed more help.

"They were doing their best; we just happened to be the right place at the right time," said Officer Ryan Ezivik of the US Park Police.

A helicopter eventually came in to pull the man and both animals from the lake.

"He seemed like he was really in extreme critical condition; he'd been in the water for we believe 45 minutes," Officer Michael Abate of the US Park Park Police.

One dog did not survive. The pets' owner is expected to be OK. William Channing was released from the hospital on Monday. Understandably, Channing says the family is mourning the loss of their family pet but is more than relived that the rescuers were able to save his dad's.

FOX's Tom Fitzgerald has more details in this video report.
