ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A spokesperson with the Orange County Sheriff's Office says attempts to save a child pulled from a retention pond on Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Shortly before 1 p.m. deputies were called about a missing 2-year-old boy at the Emerald Villas Apartments, located at 5450 Cholla Way near N. Pine Hills Road.  A short time later, a neighbor and an apartment complex worker discovered the boy in the water in a nearby fenced-in pond.

The pair started CPR on the child, and Orange County deputies took over. The child was transported to Florida Hospital South where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies are trying to determine how a toddler gotpast a gated area and into the pond.  The identity of the child has not been released.
