Second chance? DPD cadet quits after community shower, denied re-entry to Academy

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A 20-year-old Detroit resident was undergoing police officer training when he faced a difficult decision.

Charles Blackwell began the Detroit Police Academy in July 2013. A few days into the program he learned the recruits were required to shower in community showers and was uncomfortable with the requirement. He says he was "uneasy" with the concept and did not have community showers in high school.

He also says he could not afford the legal books and academy uniform.

So, he decided to quit the program.

"I wouldn't say that was the best decision at the moment, but, as I looked back I realized that I messed up a bad decision and I want the opportunity back," he says.

He adds he grew up in a Detroit neighborhood and sees neighbors who do not have hope, and wants to be a part of the solution.

He was denied re-entry into the training program.

He believes the Detroit Police Department needs all the help it can get, and that he's a good, qualified and willing candidate for the job.

The Detroit Police Department gave this statement:

"Working for the Detroit Police Department and serving the citizens of Detroit is an honor. Anytime an individual pursues employment with the Department every consideration is given to ensure his or her success. When a recruit resigns from the Department of their own volition, typically the matter is closed. However, when a recruit decides he or she would like to be reinstated and continue the process of becoming a police officer this Department will thoroughly investigate all the circumstances surrounding their employment.  After a thorough investigation either the former student police officer is reinstated or is not."

Do you think he should be given a second chance?
