Video: Trooper Performs CPR On Driver

Posted: Updated:

A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper is being called a hero, after performing CPR on an unconscious man on the side of a busy highway.

Officials say Trooper Yudiel Santana responded to a crash on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 195, right near North Miami Avenue, Saturday around noon.

WSVN reports the driver, Kareem Shaker, crashed right into a guardrail. "Before I stepped out of my car, I was advised by dispatch that the driver was [having] convulsions and also didn't have any pulse," said Santana. "As soon as I stepped out of the car, one of the Good Samaritans that was on the scene he told me, 'Hey, trooper, the man doesn't have any pulse.'"

The dashcam video shows, Santana, who has been with the Florida Highway Patrol for three years, taking Shaker out of the vehicle and performing CPR on the man.

Just moments later, Miami Beach officer Tino Serrano stepped in to help with the CPR. "My first action was I placed my right hand on his neck and my left hand on his right shoulder to get him out of the car. There was a Good Samaritan that was right there sitting with me, so both together, we placed the guy on the ground, and I started performing CPR," said Santana. "The driver was gasping for air, so he was coughing trying to get some air in his lungs."

The officer's help really made a difference. They were able to bring Shaker back to consciousness. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital and has since checked out of the hospital. "I just want to thank him for saving my life. He went above and beyond the line of duty, and I appreciate his effort," said Shaker. "People like him should be commended because they are there to save lives."

"Thank God, for him, I was close in the area. God used me to give this guy a second opportunity, a second chance at life," said Santana. "I didn't think about anything. I just react to it. There is no time to think, every second counts."

Officials continue to investigate what caused the crash.
