Paul Taylor Dance Company returns to Lincoln Center

If you're already a fan of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, you know this is a season you won't want to miss. But if you're looking for an introduction to this iconic modern dance troupe there's no time like the present.

"This season is the 60th anniversary of the Paul Taylor Dance Company," says dancer Michael Trusnovec. "It's also going to include Mr. Taylor's 140th dance. It's spanning 23 works over the 3 weeks so you're getting a span from early, early years back in the '60s to the brand new marathon credenza."

From the erotic acrobatics of "Piazolla Caldera" to the feverish spasms of the 1960s retrospective "A Field of Grass," Paul Taylor's astounding range points to why his artistry remains relevant after six decades and why audiences across America can't seem to get enough.

"All the works he makes capture a lot of the American experience, the resiliency and power of hope of the spirit that resonates in this country," Trusnovec says.

I was fortunate enough to catch an inside look at the company's creative process at one of its last rehearsals before it brings its 2014 repertoire home to New York City.

"When we're this close to the season, is when we start showing the dances to Paul," says dancer Eran Bugge. "So Paul sees them as semi-finished products and he puts the final touches on for us."

Anyone watching can't help but notice the intimate nature of Taylor's choreography. It demands a closeness and trust between his dancers. So I had to wonder, are they that close when they're not performing?

"We're family in the company," says dancer Michael Apuzzo. "We see each other every day we go to each other's weddings we hang out after work."

"It's a lot of eye contact too during performances," Trusnovec says. "Just seeing someone and making sure they see you -- some of the partnering can be almost death defying."

To offset the high-stakes of performing on stage, the dancers told me they try to let loose while on tour by sightseeing and eating as a family. But at the end of the day, nothing brings the family closer than performing at home in Manhattan.

"The New York audience is the best," Bugge says. "You know they're just as excited as we are."
