Caught On Camera: Student Hit With Broom By Bus Driver

Posted: Updated:

An Indianapolis school bus driver hits a student with a broom, and the entire altercation is caught on camera.

In the video, you're seeing bus driver 47-year-old Charlotte McDaniel taking a broom to the face of 14-year-old Autumn Bonilla.

"I didn't know what I got hit with at first," Autumn Bonilla recalled.

Bonilla says she almost blacked out but stayed conscious as the driver held her down.

"She hit me in my temple with the broomstick. I have a fractured bone in my nose," Bonilla said.

The audio in the video is low because video of this incident is contains profane words.

"She told me I had to put my phone away... and I told her I wasn't putting anything away. Then we started cussing at each other," Bonilla said.

This is a few minutes before the broom hit. Then, Bonilla and the driver go at it, swearing and fighting.

The 14 year old appears to pin the bus driver down.

"I completely 100% admit that I started it. I'm not going to sit here and lie to you. I did start it. But that don't give a grown woman a reason to put her hands on me at all," reflected Bonilla.

"I couldn't believe that an adult would hit a child like that," said mother Karen Bonilla. Karen Bonilla pulled her daughter out of school and wants the driver punished.

Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) says they are investigating and don't agree with how the driver handled things.

"[We're] concerned and want to assure our community that driver or any driver that exhibit those behaviors will not be allowed to transport our students," said Dr. Lewis Frebee, the IPS Superintendent.

Autumn and her mother admit that the teen's actions got her in trouble, but they can't believe it escalated to this level.

The bus driver says her attorney advised her not to comment on the case. The Marion County Prosecutor is reviewing the case.
