New Detroit police officers medically uninsured for first 90 days

Posted: Updated:

Under a new insurance plan to cut costs, new Detroit police hires must work at least 91 days before their health insurance becomes active.

The current class of new recruits is the first class to not have insurance immediately. Prior to January 1, 2014, every new hire at DPD was insured on day one.

"A lot of them quit their jobs to come here and they are medically uninsured right now," says Donna Latouf, secretary treasurer for the Detroit Police Officers Association. She points out the latest class of new police officers won't have health insurance until June 1.

"Anything can happen to them. ... It's just not fair to these new recruits. It doesn't promote people coming on the department with this," she says.

Latouf has reached out to the state and FOX 2 has contacted the emergency manager.

A spokesperson says they are working on a solution.
