Where does a red carpet come from?

We all know who walks on it, but where does a red carpet come from?

Ted Resnick of Event Rugs in Flemington, New Jersey, specializes in the custom red carpets you'll find at high profile events all over New York City.

"It's a lot of work to put it down and it's a lot of work to take it up. It's an expensive product, it's a heavy product," he says. "Most people if they want to buy a red carpet, they don't know where to buy it because there's not a lot of people selling it."

He has carpeted glamorous affairs such as the MTV Video Music Awards and the Met Gala. Even the pope has walked on Resnick's rugs.

He says that "working for the pope it was the thrill of a lifetime, we got front row seats."

With every red carpet comes an air of exclusivity and a price tag to match.

For a big A-list award show like the Oscars the red carpet can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000. Almost as expensive as the carpet itself is the manpower it takes to set it up.

"If you're doing a job like the MTV's you're probably talking about 20 people on that job" for three days, he says.

But if you're planning a viewing party for this Sunday's Academy Awards, you and a couple of friends can replicate the flooring of the rich and famous on a smaller scale. You can get a small piece for $50 to $100.

A red carpet's life, while fabulous, is short-lived.

"We recycle most of them into just plain nylon fiber," he says. "Most of it is not used a second time."
