Panda running for mayor of DC?

Posted: Updated:

There is breaking news from the campaign trail. In the race for D.C. mayor, there is now a most unusual candidate.

Somebody out there in Twitterville is promoting a giant panda for mayor!

"That's good. That's good," said one person on the streets of Northwest D.C. Thursday.

"A panda? I'd be a little concerned about that," says another.

Yes, the early polling is mixed. Our giant panda bears are a national treasure, but are the bamboo-munchers worthy of your vote?

"Well, you know, I have to think about that," says D.C. Councilmember Tommy Wells, who represents Ward 6 and is running for mayor also. "You know there are a lot of good things about pandas. They're both black and white."

Ward 2's Jack Evans is also running.

"Well, we need another candidate in the race and a new point of view and I think the panda can bring that point of view to the discussion,” he says. “We now have eight candidates. This will make an even nine."

The @PandaforMayorDC Twitter account opened February 8. It already has more than 100 followers, including Mayor Vincent Gray's campaign for re-election.

His manager says, "Mayor Gray likes pandas, but during this election, he is focused on real issues and real people."

There are a couple of eligibility requirements for candidates for D.C. mayor. First of all, you have to live in the city. All three pandas at the National Zoo qualify there.

Secondly, you need to be registered to vote in the District for at least a year prior to the election. That one might be a deal-breaker.

But Wells says laws could be tweaked a little.

"I think we could work this out, but also the panda would have to fully support statehood for our city,” says Wells.

It would sure be a heck of a symbol.

"Some people say the city's a zoo," says Evans. "So who knows?"
