New Shedd exhibit aims to dispel shark myths

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If you learned everything you know about sharks from the movies, you might want to check out an incredible behind-the-scenes look at shark feeding at Shedd Aquarium.

FOX 32's Jake Hamilton got a behind-the-scenes look at this awe-inspiring exhibit.

It goes without saying that since the release of "Jaws," sharks have experienced a bit of a public relations nightmare. But Shedd Aquarium is hoping to show us how misunderstood sharks can be by offering an incredible look at how they're fed.

Peter Benchly, the author of "Jaws," once wrote, "I couldn't write "Jaws" today. The extensive new knowledge of sharks would make it impossible for me to create, in good conscience, a villain of the magnitude and malignity of the original."

So forget the music. Forget the lines. Forget the movies. It's time to get real.

Starting this Sunday, the Shedd Aquarium will be offering a behind the scenes, up-close-and-personal shark feeding experience.

Swimming through 400,000 gallons of man-made sea water, these awe-inspiring creatures represent a species that have experienced a bit of a public misconception – and that's why Lise Watson says the exhibit shines an important light on breaking the negative attitude toward sharks.

Organized is an understatement – the sharks are trained to recognize their specific feed times and locations through a series of signs and sounds.

And Watson hopes people's experience with the feeding, which features a measured and vitamin enriched diet, will help them understand just how valuable sharks really are.

So don't be afraid.

This behind the scenes look into the world of shark feeding is meant to be enriching, not terrifying.

To teach us that sometimes the greatest enemy of all is our own fear.

The exhibit kicks off at Shedd Aquarium on Sunday. For more information, visit
