Panda For DC Mayor?

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON D.C. -

A viral campaign is promoting a panda for mayor of our nation's capital.

The three Pandas at the National Zoo are sound asleep. There's a hungry papa bear Tian Tian, mama bear Mei Xiang and baby bear Bao Bao.

"I'm obsessed. Since she was born, I watch the cam all the time. I don't get a thing done at home now. But I think they're beautiful," said Carolyn Taylor.

Yes our giant panda bears are a national treasure, but are the bamboo munchers worthy of your vote for mayor?

"I think people anthropomorphize animals a little too much sometimes. But given our politicians... that might not be a bad thing," said Tricia Robinson, a DC resident.

Yes, somebody out there in twitter-ville is promoting a panda for mayor of DC.

"That's good. That's good. That would be nice," said another DC resident.

"A panda? I'd be a little concerned about that," cautions another.

Yes, the early polling is mixed.

Ward 6 councilmember Tommy Wells is a candidate.

"Well you know I have to think about that. You know there's a lot of good things about pandas. They're both black and white," said Tommy Wells.

Jack Evans is running from ward 2.

"When did this happen?" said Evans.

The twitter account opened on February 8th. Already it has more than 100 followers, including current mayor Vincent Gray's campaign for re-election.

Mayor Gray's Campaign for re-election likes pandas, but during this election he is focused on real issues and real people.

Now before you get all excited. FOX 5 decided to look into the eligibility requirements. There are only two: first of all, you have to live in the city; Check; second, you need to be registered to vote in the district for at least a year prior to the election. That one might be a deal-breaker.

However, Mr. Wells says laws could be tweaked a little.

"I think we could work this out, but also the panda would have to fully support statehood for our city."

It would sure be a heck of a symbol.

"Some people say the city's a zoo so who knows!" said Evans.

It's definitely something to chew on.
