TX Jail Teaches Inmates To Farm And Garden

Posted: Updated:

One Texas jail is planting the seeds of an idea that could save taxpayers thousands of dollars annually! Inmates at the Hill County Jail are learning to farm their own food, spending hours each day planting, watering, tilling and weeding.

Chief Deputy Rodney Watson says that the men who have been growing the veggies are also less likely to cause problems in the jail.

He says that the men who put in a hard day's work on the fields are too tired to argue and fight when they get back inside.

"The main thing is it just gets the inmates out and puts them to work," said Sheriff Michael Cox.

The men who work the gardens agree.

"Oh it's great, it's lovely to get outside and enjoy this weather," said inmate Chris Stephenson. "Take a lot of pride in this."

"We're going to be happy to see something that we started from the ground to come up. I've gardened a little bit at home before, but I'm doing a little more here," he added.

"Inmates can be more than what we're portrayed as some of us got good hearts, and we can be trusted because we're locked up we can do some productive things," said Stephenson.

Officials say some of the inmates plan on using their newfound farming skills to start a career once they get released.

"These guys can come out here and learn a trade and they take a trade out with them in a real world and it really helps them out and gives them confidence," said Watson.
