DNR: Fish houses off Minnesota lakes by 11:59 p.m. March 3

EXCELSIOR, Minn. (KMSP) -

Lakes across the lower part of Minnesota are overflowing with frustration this week. Anglers are struggling to dig through snow pack in order to get their fish houses off the ice before the DNR deadline at 11:59pm Monday night.

Tim Newcomer and Jason Butler chipped away at their fish house on Medicine Lake for more than four hours Friday afternoon.

"When it got up to 40 degrees a couple weeks ago and everything melted -- I kinda expected it," says Newcomer.

Over on Lake Minnetonka things aren't any easier. We spotted Gary Gachne putting chains on his tires in his second attempt to get his house off the lake.

"This last snow pack really did it. Before that we could get out there," says Gachne. "The house isn't too bad, I think I can get the house out. It's just getting out to it. We'll give it shot and see what happens."

1/18: Treacherous ice leaves fisherman landlocked up north

Further north on Little Green Lake in Chisago County it took another angler several tries, a bobcat, plow and more than nine hours to get his fish house. Through that long process some are asking why the DNR doesn't push the deadline back a bit.

"It's not going to get any easier to pull these houses off, says Conservation Officer Amber Peterson. "That's why the deadline is firm. If you are having difficulties and making an effort they need to contact conservation officers."

Owners who don't remove shelters risk getting a ticket and the fines very by county.

Meanwhile Jon Suedbeck has made a business putting an ad on Craigslist.. and using his Jeep equip for rock climbing. At 200 dollars per pull his business is booming.

"We pulled a plow truck last weekend. That's the only other way you can get out," says Suedbeck. "I can only pull off so many... call me now."

Again shelters must be off ice no later than 11:59 p.m. Monday in Southern 2/3 of state.
