PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Phoenix Police have released the name of the young girl who lost her life as a result of a car accident on Friday evening.

Investigators say 4-year-old Angel Diaz was killed in the accident, and that her 6-year-old brother is in the hospital.  Police say they were both riding in a Nissan Frontier pickup when the crash happened near 83rd Avenue and Osborn at about 7:15pm Friday.

Officers are saying the driver of a Ford Explorer drove into traffic, crashing into a Chevy Malibu and then hitting the Nissan head-on.  The passengers suffered serious injuries, and were rushed to the hospital.   Two children in the car were not in child seats, but they were wearing seat belts, according to officers: the 4-year-old girl died soon after she was taken to the hospital, and the 3-year-old boy from that vehicle remains in the hospital in stable condition.

The woman driving the Ford Explorer was seven months pregnant, and police say she was taken to a nearby hospital and had to undergo emergency surgery to deliver her unborn child.

On Sunday, police said the infant remains in extremely critical condition.  Detectives continue to investigate whether impairment may have been a factor in the crash.

Police have not released the names of the victims or the cause of the accident.
