Western Avenue to close on North Side for park construction

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A portion of Western Avenue will close the weekend of March 7-9 for construction on the Bloomingdale Trail, the location of a new North Side trail-and-park project known as "The 606."

Starting at 8 p.m. March 7, Western Avenue will be closed to traffic between Wabansia and Cortland avenues and will reopen no later than 5 a.m. March 10, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Construction crews will be working to remove the existing railroad bridge at Bloomingdale Avenue to make way for a multi-use linear park that will run along the 2.7-mile unused, elevated rail line, the agency reports.

All traffic, including CTA's Western Avenue Route #49 buses, will be rerouted west to California Avenue via North and Armitage avenues, according to CDOT. The viaduct at Winnebago Avenue will also be closed for construction, detouring pedestrians west to the Bloomingdale viaduct at Campbell Avenue.

Residents who live near Western and Bloomingdale may hear noise or feel vibrations during the weekend work period, as the project requires concrete removal, as well as demolition and removal of the bridge parts, CDOT said.
