Thousands Gather For Annual "Battle Of The Oranges"

Thousands gathered in a small Italian town on Sunday as they kicked-off their carnival season with a mediaeval battle re-enactment using fruit!

The event is an annual tradition that has taken place since the mid-1800s in a small town in Northern Italy.

Participants road in carriages throughout the town, initiating an epic battle with oranges as ammunition.

Those who aren't interested in participating can stay on the sidelines and sport a red hat, signifying that they are excluded from the battle.

Volunteers who wanted to participate are assigned a team. Prizes and awards are given to participants with notable throwing abilities.

Everyone in the town is allowed to participate, but don't assume this is a delicate game; bruises and black eyes from the pelted fruit are considered "honorable."
