WILMINGTON, Del. -

Police in Delaware say a 16-year-old is facing weapon's charges after he was seen by trying to conceal a very large handgun in his waistband.

This happened just before noon Sunday at West 6th and North Jefferson streets in Wilmington, police say.

Two officers on patrol say they saw the teen trying to hide the weapon. When they attempted to stop the juvenile, he fled through an alleyway and discarded the loaded, .40-caliber handgun with an extended magazine.

He was later taken into custody after the foot chase.

The teen, who lives on the 2400 block Bowers Street, also in Wilmington, faces charges of carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

He was arraigned and taken to the New Castle County Detention Center in lieu of $14,000 secured bond, police said.
