GOP contests among key Ill. primaries for Congress

Posted: Updated:
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Only half of Illinois' 18 congressional seats will feature party primary contests on March 18, and even fewer will be competitive.

The most watched are between Republicans as the party aims to undo a near Democratic sweep of closely contested seats in 2012.

Key matchups include one between U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, Harvard law school graduate and former Miss America Erika Harold and veterinarian Michael Firsching in the 13th congressional district.

Davis won the district by a slim margin in 2012, and the battle with Democrats for the seat in November could be one of the most targeted races in the country.

Another Republican contest will be southwest of Chicago where four Republicans are vying for the chance to face U.S. Rep. Bill Foster of Naperville in the 11th district.
