A routine traffic stop lands a Philadelphia police officer in the hospital after patrol cars get hit by a suspected drunk driver.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. at 11th and Cumberland streets in North Philly.

Police say they had pulled over one driver at Jessup and Cumberland streets just before 2 a.m. when suddenly, out of nowhere came a maroon minivan that other officers were chasing and attempting to pull over.

Police tell us this suspected drunk driver was going up onto the sidewalk and hitting stoops of homes during his attempted getaway. The minivan van hit a civilian car with a driver inside, throwing the vehicle up an incline on the side of Fotterall Square Park.

Then, the minivan hit the police cars that had stopped to pull over the other driver.

An officer inside one of the cars was injured and taken to Temple University Hospital, but we're told he'll be OK.

The minivan's 25-year-old driver, who is being tested on suspicion of DUI, was also hospitalized in critical condition. The minivan was mangled and its driver's-side doors were apparently sheered off in the series of wrecks.

Police estimate the minivan had been traveling at 60 mph during the short chase.

North 11th Street remains closed as police investigate. Vehicles were starting to be towed from the scene around 5:30 a.m.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has more details in this video report.
