Teen's Last Wish To Help Dying Animals Recover, Find Homes

Posted: Updated:

Doctors told Katherine Mitchell she wouldn't live past the age of 15 after she was diagnosed with marfan syndrome, celiac disease, epilepsy, and heart disease.

She is now 16 and her last wish is unique and selfless.

Mitchell started a pitbull rescue out of her family's home. Roman's Rescue was founded after the family adopted a dog, Roman, with the same diseases that Katherine lived with. Roman was projected to live three months but lived to the age of 10 months.

Roman's death came as a humbling reality to the family, who now began to understand the fragility of their daughter's life.

The family then began taking in animals that were scheduled to be euthanized with the hopes of training and socializing them so they could adopt them out.

Mitchell's dying wish is to make her non-profit even bigger. She wants to host adoption events and see her non-profit become even more meaningful than it is now.

With heavy hearts, the family has accepted Katherine's fatality.

But Roman inspired Katherine to create a bucket list.

"She will end up dying from a heart aneurysm and there's nothing we can do to stop it," said Katherine's mother," Carol Mitchell. "She tweeted that she was glad all these things happened to her because she could handle it."

Roman's Rescue also donates animal foster homes various necessities like food and leashes. The Mitchells believe the rescue group will be Katherine's legacy.
