Whether you are a green thumbed guru, a first time gardener or just looking for a refresher before the spring season, there are 4 useful tips that you need to know before you start on any gardening project.

1. Sunlight - Determine the amount of sun your garden gets

  • Some plants prefer sun and some perform better in shade
  • Full Sun: Your garden receives 6 to 8 hours of full sun each day

Forsthyia

  • Densely packed yellow flowers
  • Works well in small gardens and containers
  •  Grows 3-5 feet high and 4 to 7 feet wide
  • Partial Sun: your garden receives 3 to 6 hours of sun a day. This usually occurs in the late morning to early afternoon

Camellia

  • Bright beautiful blooms and is an evergreen
  • Great for hedges and screens
  • Grows 5-10 feet high and 7 to 12 feet wide
  • Partial Shade: Your garden receives sun that is filtered through leaves or by an adjacent building or plant with filtered light coming in for most of the day
  • Shade: Your garden receives 3 hours of sun and is in the shade the majority of the day

Winter Daphne

  • Small mounding evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage
  • 4 feet tall
  • Strong vanilla-like fragrance

2. Soil - Consider your soil type

  • Determine your soil type – We have a system at Pike locations that can help!
  • Pike Planting Mix, it is a mix that includes organic matter mixed with particles for improving soil drainage. This will also help to break up the red clay and provide for better drainage.
  • Blend the mix with the native soil at a 50/50 ratio

3. Planting – Plant the proper way

  • General rule of thumb: dig a hole twice the height and width of the rootball
  • Mix the soil 50/50 with Pike Planting Mix
  • Use a handful of E.B. Stone Sure Start fertilizer in the hole
  • Remove the pot and place the plant in the center of the hole
  • Use the remaining mixed soil around the top of the soil
  • Tap gently around the plant to condense the soil

4. Watering - It is critical that you water in your plant as soon as you plant it and then continue to water well while it establishes

  • Note if your plant has any special watering requirements
  • The first year it is important to supplement water to all plants
  • Container plants will need more water in the hot summer months
  • Shady spots will not need the extra water a sunny spot would
