Final demolition set at Detroit housing project

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- Officials plan to kick off the final phase of demolition of a well-known vacant Detroit housing project located near the city's downtown.

Active demolition begins Monday on four 15-story towers that are part of the former Frederick Douglass Homes, better known as the Brewster projects.

The housing project once was home to boxer Joe Louis and the Supremes before the musical trio became vital voices of the Motown sound. Other demolition work began at the site last year.

A news conference is planned with attendees including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary Sandra Henriquez and Don Graves, who is President Barack Obama's point person on Detroit.

The bankrupt city says the demolition is being paid for through $6.5 million in federal funds.
