SEPTA Trying To Steer Clear Of Potential Transit Strike

PHILADELPHIA -

SEPTA management and union negotiators go back to contract talks as the transit authority works to avoid a strike.

SEPTA management is in negotiations with Transit Workers Union 234. Some contracts expire at the end of the week.

SEPTA released a statement, saying, "We hope to avoid a work stoppage, but whether or not there is a strike is in the union's court. SEPTA management remains ready to address the issues and explore common solutions and we are hopeful that good faith negotiations will eventually result in a contract."

Nationwide, a record number of riders used mass transit last year - due in part to the high cost of gasoline.

In Philadelphia, local transit agencies have seen steady growth in ridership in recent years.

But SEPTA and PATCO ridership was down slightly in 2013. The agencies blamed the decrease on construction, fare hikes, and bad weather.

NJ Transit ridership was up 1.5 percent to 266 million riders, its second-highest total ever.
