Auditions for national anthem performers held at Citi Field

Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

On a cloudy winter day in Queens, there were signs of spring on Monday. Citi field is getting ready for its home opener which is now three weeks away. Before that first pitch is thrown, one special person or group will perform the national anthem.

"Today is the anthem finals. We had 20 contestants come out and they all sang the national anthem because we are looking for someone to sing on opening day on March 31st when we open up the baseball season," said Danielle Sessa, the Citi Field director of communications.

Folks from across the New York City area stepped up to the plate Monday to audition for this coveted spotlight, like Dyker Heights second grader Amanda Summa, 13-year-old Victoria from Ozone Park, and Long Islander Shelby Dufton.

Contestants were judged on their lyrical accuracy, vocal strength, pacing, stage presence and energy.

After watching all of these talented people perform, I wanted to know what it would feel like to sing in Citi Field, so I sang the "Star-Spangled Banner," too.

"There was so many great contestants, that besides picking someone to sing the anthem on opening day, we're probably going to invite some other folks to come back and sing on other days during our 81 games," Sessa said.

I wonder if I will be one of them.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
