UNCC has about thirty registered spiritual organizations on campus. One of them, the Muslim Student Association, is requesting designated prayer space from the university. They believe it would enhance their academic and student life.

Keyona Shears is a senior. She prays between bookshelves in the school library.

“The bookshelves provide privacy and protection, and it provides that ability to not be so focused on who I am distracting and not being distracted myself,” she said.

Dr. Arthur Jackson, vice chancellor for student affairs says the school currently doesn’t have funding and not enough space on campus for a designated prayer space.

“We have about 400 student organizations on campus. All of them would like an office on campus. We don't have that,” Jackson said.

He says students are allowed to reserve classrooms on a space availability basis. The school is just not able to provide permanent space for prayer and meditation. Their first priority is academics.

“We can't take a room off line that we use for staff office or for classrooms or conferences and use that for that particular purpose, but students are given space on a scheduled basis,” he said.
