Dentists urged to help solve identity of body

Posted: Updated:

PONTIAC, Mich. -- Authorities are asking Detroit-area dentists for help in identifying the mummified remains of a woman found in a car last week.

Investigators believe it's Pia Farrenkopf, but the identity hasn't been settled. There's evidence of extensive dental work, and Oakland County authorities believe dental records could quickly confirm a name.

But they don't know the dentist who treated Farrenkopf.

"Our goal is to forensically identify the deceased woman as soon as possible so that her family can have closure and she can receive a proper and dignified burial," said Dr. Ljubisa J. Dragovic, Oakland County Medical Examiner. "If we can acquire her dental records, we can identify her within a day of receiving those records."

Voting records raise questions after mummified body found in Pontiac

The body was found in the rear seat of Farrenkopf's Jeep in her garage in Pontiac. She may have been dead for more than five years. There is no evidence of foul play.

Without dental records, authorities would have to turn to DNA from Farrenkopf's family in Massachusetts. That process could take months.

Meantime, investigators are focusing on investigating her vehicle.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says the key was found in the ignition, but they may not have been in the "off" position as previously thought. One of the inspectors at the house may have turned it prior to knowing a body was in the backseat.

Now investigators are trying to determine more engineering information about the car and when it was last running.

Authorities were also able to subpoena bank records, which show an account withdrawal from early February of 2009. Bouchard says that may be the woman's last known activity.

Bouchard also says Farrenkoph's family did have police do a welfare check years ago, but that was in 2007 when she was still alive.
