'Heathers the Musical' first look

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - If you were a teen in the 1980s, your movie choices about adolescence were pretty limited. You had a choice between one saccharin-sweet John Hughes film and another, like "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," or "Pretty in Pink." They were fun to watch but they all followed a predictable happy ending formula, generally starring Molly Ringwald.

"Heathers" changed all that in 1989. The dark comedy became an instant cult classic. It's a twist on the clichéd story: nerdy girl gets taken in by cool mean girls, but instead of blossoming into a swan and getting asked out by the captain of the football team, she and her bad boy boyfriend kill the popular kids. It sounds horrific but it was funny. And edgy. And they immortalized lines like: "What's your damage? Drool much,"f*** me gently with a chainsaw," and "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast, Heather?"

We met up with director Andy Fickman and the three Heathers from the new Off-Broadway musical that opens in New York March 31, which happens to be the 25th anniversary of the release of the "Heathers" movie. It's called "Heathers the Musical."

On Day 6 of dress rehearsals, it's still rough around the edges but you can already see they're staying true to the dark humor of the original movie.

"We do death by poisoning. Funny. We do death by gunshot. Once. Funny. Death by gunshot twice. Funny. Fake hanging. Funny. Death by bomb. Funny," Fickman said.

And they take liberties where the movie can't, like have characters sing about their feelings.

The show has gotten the blessing from Dan Waters, the movie's writer, plus the original stars, Christian Slater and Winona Ryder. The young actress stepping into Winona's shoes couldn't be more excited.

"The greatest female part for my age range ever written as far as I'm concerned," Barrett Wilbert Weed said.

And the show's "J.D." is making sure to do his own take on the murderous boyfriend.

"I try to stray away from Christian Slater impressions as much as I can," Ryan McCartan said. "I can't help that I sort of look like him."

I think the whole cast will kill it.

The saying art is autobiographical takes on a whole new meaning when your canvas is a fully nude human body, as it is for artist Andy Golub. Andy along with 30 other artists and 45 Technicolor models paraded around several Manhattan hotspots over the weekend for NYC Body Painting day. Believe or not, this is completely legal in New York City.
