Chicago questions safety of rideshare

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

When you hail a ride with ridesharing companies Uber-X, Lyft and Sidecar, you run more than just the risk of a high demand surcharge. State lawmakers and insurance regulators believe you could also be getting into an uninsured car.

"Personal rideshare vehicles like Uber-X only have personal insurance, when they're acting as commercial transporters for hire they're not covered, they're excluded in their policies," said State Senator Marty Sandoval.

That also means riders are not covered either. Several users told us they had no idea.

"That's definitely something to keep in mind, I don't know that I would use Uber-X any longer, maybe if I'm going on a really short distance, but that's not something you really think about or have to think about when you get in a regular cab," said Meghan Corson, an Uber-X rider.

The city council has subpoenaed insurance policy information from all three rideshare companies operating in Chicago.

An Uber-X driver refused to talk to FOX 32 News about her insurance. "I cannot answer that, I'm in traffic, if you're not my customer, I'm sorry, but I can't park here."

The taxi industry is calling for new legislation, and believes until the insurance issues are corrected, rideshare companies should not be allowed to operate. Drivers and passengers are at risk.

"But the person who's not making a choice here, who could really find him or herself in a bad situation is a member of the public, a pedestrian crossing the street that is struck by one of these vehicles or injured in some way," added Mara Georges, an attorney for taxi companies.

FOX 32 News reached out to all three rideshare companies for comment or explanation of their insurance policies, but Uber-X and Sidecar did not respond. Lyft said that its drivers are covered by what the company calls a "first-of-its-kind" 1-million dollar commercial insurance policy.

All three companies have been ordered to present their insurance details to the city council by Friday.
