Philly Now In Midst Of Its Second-Snowiest Winter

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

With yet another snowstorm – the 16th time we've had a measurable snowfall in Philadelphia this winter – and we've reached a new milestone.

With 4.5 inches so far at Philadelphia International Airport, this is now the second-snowiest winter we've ever recorded in the city.

That knocks 1995-1996, when we had 65.5 inches, down to the No. 2 spot.

"I really think it's good we got the distinction at least because of all that we've suffered this winter through storm after storm after storm," FOX 29's Sue Serio said.

Hopefully we won't make a run at the all-time high, 78.7 inches, back in 2009-2010.

We had plenty of schools that delayed openings and some that closed farther south, where the higher snow totals were recorded.

We had our first local towns reaching double-digit snow totals by noon. Wildwood Crest has already recorded 10.5 inches.

And the storm that first brought that snow to the area Sunday night isn't completely out of here yet. We're seeing more flakes in Philadelphia at lunchtime.

It's going to stay cold for the rest of the day even after the snow ends and even if the sun comes out. Colder air moved in Sunday.

Our high will be only 33 degrees, and with some lingering flurries we'll only get a few peeks at the sun on this St. Patrick's Day. We'll dip down into the upper-20s at night.

Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories were allowed to expire at noon.

But the pot of gold at the end of this seven-day forecast will be warmer temperatures. We'll see some more precipitation in the form of rain on Wednesday, then we'll hit 58 degrees for the first day of spring on Thursday.

We should stay in the 50s through Saturday, when there will be a chance of rain. Sunday looks a little cooler at 47.

"So, of the next seven days, this is the worst of it. You're getting through it just fine, we hope!" Serio said.
