30-Acre Brush Fire In The Gorman Area

Posted: Updated:

Update:

GORMAN, Calif. (AP) -- A wildfire burning through tinder-dry ranchland in northern Los Angeles County has grown to 150 acres but firefighters are making progress.

Fire officials say the blaze in Gorman is now 35 percent contained and no houses are in immediate danger, although crews are keeping an eye on three ranch homes in the sparsely-populated area.

The fire broke out shortly before 1:30 p.m. Friday south of State Route 138, about 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Nearly 200 firefighters and several helicopters fought the blaze, along with two Super Scooper aircraft that drew water from a nearby lake.

No evacuations have been ordered.

Southern California has seen a return of hot, dry weather since a brief but fierce storm hit more than a week ago.

The California Highway Patrol reports that Old Ridge Route south of state Route 138 has been closed in the Gorman area due to heavy flames from a 30-acre brush fire. County fire officials say the sheriff's department has been called in to assist with some evacuations. Structures are being threatened by flames, according to fire officials.
