Female body found near where Des Plaines woman went missing

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A body was found Friday afternoon near the site where a former Des Plaines woman went missing in December after floodwaters swept away the pickup she and her husband were driving in southern Indiana.

A local resident spotted the body lying on top of some corn stalk debris about 1:45 p.m. Friday near the mouth of a creek that feeds into the White River in southern Indiana, where authorities first searched for Kathryn McGill last December, a statement from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

The body has been identified as female, according to the Pike County, Ind. Coroner's office, but additional details were not immediately available.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The DNR said Friday the Vanderburgh County Morgue would be conducting the autopsy, but when reached Saturday morning all calls were referred to the Pike County Coroner's office.

On Dec. 29, 2013, Adam and Kathryn McGill were swept off the roadway on Route 257, near the border between Pike and Daviess counties, and into floodwaters at the White River, the DNR said. Initial DNR reports said the couple was from Des Plaines.

The couple had been visiting family in the Washington, Ind., area, where Adam McGill is originally from, DNR Conservation Officer Jim Schreck said at the time. They were heading back to their home in Norfolk, Va., when they drove around a barrier on a flooded road and were swept away, he said.

People hunting waterfowl saw the Chevrolet Colorado enter the water about 7:45 a.m., and drove their boat to the area, the statement said at the time.

The boaters heard cries for help and found and rescued 35-year-old Adam McGill, who was driving, but could not find Kathryn McGill, officials said.
