ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities say a motorist was killed in a car crash that involved an Atlanta police officer who was responding to a call.

A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department tells FOX 5 News that the collision happened around 1:30 a.m. on Cleveland Avenue.

Investigators said the Atlanta officer was on his way to a call when they say a minivan attempted to turn onto Beeler Drive, but ended up turning into the path of the officer.

Three passengers inside the minivan had to be cut out as a result of the crash. The driver and a rear passenger were both taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The front passenger, identified by the Fulton Medical Examiner's Office as being Aarron Brown, Sr., 57, of Atlanta, died at the scene as a result of the accident.

The officer was also taken to the hospital, but did not appear to have sustained any serious injuries.

Police said they did not immediately know whether the officer's lights and sirens were activated when the collision occurred.
