Caught On Camera: Armed Robber Strikes Southwest McDonald's

PHILADELPHIA -

Police are looking for the guy in this surveillance video, who stormed into a McDonald's restaurant and terrorized workers.

The drive up window didn't have what this armed robber was looking for last Friday so inside he went, his hand on what witnesses said was a gun in his pocket and his heart set on making off with some quick cash.

"He sees the employee behind the counter with a cash drawer with money, he goes right towards that employee starts pushing them around," Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives told FOX 29.

The robber walked into this McDonalds at 60th and Woodland just before 6 a.m., demanding money from cashiers as they were changing shifts. He confronted two different cashiers until he grabbed a fistful of money from one and took off.

"He appears to be desperate," Walker said "He's in there a decent amount of time going from employee to employee which is not usually what happens."

"Something like that you would be afraid," said customer Diane Haskins.

Haskins, who comes here with her great grandchildren once or twice a week, heard about the robbery. She's says she's always conscious of her surroundings whenever she's with her little ones.

"We're going in and get our little food and we'll come right back straight out. We're not going to be sitting in there," she said.

Donna Cohen had the same concerns. She too likes to visit McDonald's with her daughter and her grandson. She doesn't want to worry about walking in on an armed robbery.

"Just gotta be careful, thank God nobody got hurt," she said.

Police believe the suspect could be from the area, and may be homeless. He was carrying a Nike backpack stuffed with clothes. Stickups in Southwest are on the rise, so detectives need the public's help.

"There is a trend of businesses being robbed," Lt. Walker explained. "We're concerned about his behavior because it can get more violent as it goes on."

"Just gotta be careful, it's everywhere," Cohen said.

A spokeswoman for McDonald's said "the safety of our customers and employees is always a top priority" She said McDonald's is cooperating with police on the investigation.

Detectives say the suspect was wearing a distinctive stripped sweatshirt and carrying that Nike back pack. Anyone with information on the suspect should call Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3183.
