Marine Saves Man Trapped Inside Burning Car

Posted: Updated:

A truck caught on fire with a man trapped inside, and a Marine who was in the right place, at the right time sprang into action.

FOX's Nicole Estaphan has the heroic story.

At first glance one might think that Sgt. Matthew Sullivan and Tracey McGinnes are old friends.

The truth is they just met, but what brought them together may have built a lifetime connection.

"I love this man right here my life is indebted to him he gave me back my son, "said McGinnes.

McGinnes' son Taray was riding in a truck on Interstate 85 last week when it caught in fire. The 26-year old was trapped inside.

Sgt. McGinnes happened to be driving by when the Marine saw black smoke and ran up to the vehicle.

With multiple tours in war zones this Marine jumped into action.

"I told him to roll there were too many flames, he started rolling I am screaming and he is screaming for help he kept lighting the grace back up with his body it was leaving a trace." Sullivan said.

The rolling wasn't working Sgt. Sullivan tried handfuls of dirt-but concern over the car exploding was growing so they ran in the direction of a nearby motorist.

"By the time we got there was a lady with a half of bottle of water and I started pouring it on his back and legs," Sullivan said.

With the fire out they waited for help to arrive. Taray is recovering from burns on 51 percent of his body, but the smiles here are about a life saved.

"That is all we care about, that's all I care about just general concern for my fellow man," Sullivan said.

"God put him there and God placed him there because he knew he could handle that," McGinnes said.
