Orlando teen scares off burglar with bat

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Orlando police are searching for two people who broke into a home, while a teenager was inside. But instead of being scared, she defended herself.

It was around 8:30 a.m. when a 17-year-old realized two thieves were in her home at the Island Club Apartments.

Her family asked us not to use their names for fear of retaliation, "I saw the front door frame was broken, I peeked around the corner and saw two people moving in my parent's bedroom."

But instead of running away, this teen took a swing at defending herself, "I ran into my closet. I grabbed my softball bat and I creeped up to the door frame of my parent's bedroom and held up the bat and screamed. The one leaning over the bed ran to slam the door in my face. As he was slamming the door, I swung the bat twice, hitting the door really hard."

The teen says the suspects got out through a sliding glass door and ran out an exit gate.

"I stopped and looked at him [and] I screamed help. [I] held up my bat and continued running into the parking lot screaming for help until someone finally came."

The girl's parents had left for work 10 minutes before the home invasion took place. Her mother believes it's someone who lives nearby.

"I was proud of her that she was able to stop it and protect herself. But then I also thought she should have called police first. And then if she wanted to go hardcore, then I could see her doing that. But she is her mother's daughter because I would have done the same thing."

The teen said, "It was kind of stupid at the same time because I never knew if they had a gun or knife. But she said she wouldn't do anything differently.

The thieves got away with a camera and watch. The teen says one of the suspects was wearing a red T-shirt with long white sleeves underneath. He also had on jeans, a black cap and sneakers.

The teen said "he was mix between black and white, about 6-feet tall" was thin and had a lanky build. She also said he had freckles on his face and his hands.

This family plans to move before the thieves try hitting again.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Orlando Police Department.
