NEW YORK (AP) - It's one of New York's more unusual tourist traditions: watching night court in Manhattan.

In a city synonymous with theaters and nightlife, it's not uncommon to find vacationers spending part of an evening straining to decode the methodical hubbub of arraignments in one of the nation's busiest courts.

Manhattan's night court has become established as a niche tourist attraction, noted in tour guides and travel websites.

Many residents may hope never to wind up there. But some travelers see it as gritty entertainment, hard-knocks education or a chance to experience real-life law and order on a New York scale.

Jenny Baumann recently visited night court on her first trip to New York. She's from Munich.

She says it was "very interesting to hear real cases."

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
