PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A horrible case of animal cruelty is under investigation in the west valley after a dog was left tied up and abandoned near 61st Ave. and Indian School Road.

Jarvis Johnson told FOX 10 he made the sad discovery after he heard someone throw something out of a vehicle.

"..came outside.. I was trying to figure out what was going on at that time.  I went around the corner, came over here, saw the dog tied up with the cord around his neck and the cord to his leg."

Neighbors tried to help the little Chihuahua, but he turned aggressive.

"We tried to pick up the dog and the dog kept snipping at us, but we can see at the back of its leg it was bleeding a lot like something was sticking out," said Johnson.

Police later rescued the dog, which was taken to an emergency vet to be checked out.

The man who found the dog called police and told us he couldn't believe someone could do something like this.

"We sat out here for a while, hoping somebody would come back.  Like almost like, hey, I'm sorry I did this, you know.  I wanna make things right.. and no one ever came back," said Johnson.  "It was just sad 'cause I have two dogs of my own. And for somebody to do something like that to an animal.. I just couldn't image nothing like that... "We hear about it all the time that things happen.. but until you actually see it with your own eyes.. until you actually experience something like that.. it's just sad, you know."

Unfortunately, the Arizona Humane Society says the dog had to be put down on Tuesday because of extensive injuries, including pelvis fractures, a spinal fracture and diminished use of the legs.

There's no information on any of the suspects.  If you have any information about this case, contact the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
