Gary cop in I-65 crash while racing home

GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A city police officer racing to his Merrillville apartment after learning it had been burglarized crashed on Interstate 65 Friday afternoon, destroying the squad car and injuring himself and occupants of the car he struck, Indiana State Police said.

Patrolman George Dickerson was on duty about 3:35 p.m. as he drove south near Ridge Road with his car's emergency lights and siren activated when he struck a 2000 Lexus, state police said, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Gary police policy requires an outside agency to investigate police crashes that involve injuries, but state police spokeswoman Sgt. Ann Wojas said her department was initially told that troopers weren't needed at the crash scene. When state police were later summoned, several Gary squads and ambulances were already there, she said.

Wojas said Dickerson and the Lexus driver, Frederick Fedorchak, gave slightly different versions of what caused the accident. Either Fedorchak was moving to the inner shoulder to make way for the police car approaching from behind or Dickerson was driving on the shoulder when he struck ice and lost control, Wojas said.

In either case, she said the police car hit the driver's side of the Lexus, and both cars slammed into the inner concrete barrier.

The officer was treated and released from The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus. Fedorchak and his daughter were treated and released from St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
