Va. Gov. Terry McAuliffe vetoes first bill

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Gov. Terry McAuliffe has vetoed his first piece of legislation.

The legislation's sponsor says the Democratic governor denied a bill aimed at clarifying how gun owners could transport firearms in their vehicles.

Rockingham Republican Del. Ben Cline issued a statement Tuesday accusing McAuliffe of trying to curry favor with gun control advocates.

Cline says his bill was meant to clarify that existing state laws allows gun owners who do not have a concealed carry permit to put guns in secure compartments, like a glove compartment, in their vehicles.

McAuliffe wants the compartments to be locked, and tried unsuccessfully to amend Cline's bill during the legislative session.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a gun control advocate, was a major donor to McAuliffe's gubernatorial campaign.
