Detroit youth choir singing 'Happy' grabbing national attention

DETROIT (WJBK) -

A video of a youth choir performing a rendition of Pharrell Williams' "Happy" has been spreading smiles across the Internet for days now.

Wednesday the 40-member choir from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences did national interviews for networks such as BET and talk shows The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Queen Latifah Show.

The video was recorded earlier this month and has already been viewed on YouTube nearly 700,000 times.

The cellphone video was recorded by Edward Bone, whose daughter is among the choir's third to eighth grade students.

Choir director Angela Kee says the video was made after a producer for NBC's "America's Got Talent" requested a recording. The students helped create the choreography.

Choir member Syvion Thomas says they picked the song because "it's a great influence on people to get people to get up, jump, be happy."

The choir has been invited to perform at Disney World, but needs help gathering enough money for travel costs.

If you would like to donate to the choir call the school at (313) 259-1744 for more information.
