School's burning of the snowman ruined by weather

Posted: Updated:

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) -- A traditional burning of a snowman ceremony at an Upper Peninsula university has been postponed because of bad weather.

For 40 years, Lake Superior State University has marked the first day of spring by burning a 10- to 12-foot-tall snowman made of a wood and wire frame and stuffed with paper "destined for the recycling bin." Students and maintenance workers build the fake snowman.

But an ironically timed snowstorm and high winds led officials to bump the event until noon Friday.

Lake Superior State says this year's ceremony will mark another transition on the Sault Ste. Marie campus. It says that school President Tony McLain will hand off the torch to light the snowman to his successor, Thomas Pleger. The presidential change takes place in July
